Stories

“The telling of our stories becomes an emotional connecting point for us. It bridges the gap between us and other people.” -John Maxwell[34]

Seize opportunities to share stories. A powerful story can and will inspire, encourage, and move people to volunteer. Sharing impactful stories produces a double result. When we hear stories from those who received the benefits from being served and those who were the ones serving, it multiplies the motivation for others to discover how they too can make a difference through serving.

Donald Miller, the author of Building a Story Brand, stated, “Story is the greatest weapon we have to combat noise because it organizes information in such a way that people are compelled to listen.”[35] Allowing volunteers to share their stories of why they serve and how much they love serving is a great motivator to invite others into the volunteer experience. Showcasing volunteer stories, either personally from the stage, a video on social media, or even in print on a photo wall can be far more compelling than any message the ministry leader could share.

Share both perspectives of the story. Have children share their favorite leaders and invite volunteers to share their favorite serving stories in service or promo videos.

Highlight stories in your weekly or monthly volunteer update emails. Share short stories of impactful ministry moments about how volunteering touched the hearts and lives of those serving in your ministry.

Create a video to showcase volunteering in Kids Min. Share the video from the mainstage and on social media to promote the fun, excitement, and benefits of being a volunteer.

Create a 30-second volunteer vision-video blast to share everywhere for one month. It will serve as a great segue to share an invitation to serve.

Highlight volunteering to your parents by inviting your volunteer team to share their favorite serving stories and add one to your monthly parent newsletter.

Create pre-service announcement videos using testimonials from current volunteers.

Produce video testimonies of kids sharing what their volunteer leaders mean to them. Life becomes meaningful when we see ourselves as actors within the context of the story.[36] Stories from our Kids Min kiddos will allow people to be aware of the need for dedicated volunteers and create a desire to step in and serve.

Video volunteers, who are in their sweet spot sharing their stories, post them on social media, or play them in service.

Create a video of all the different volunteer opportunities in Kids Min. When people think of Preschool Ministry, all they think of is diapers. Allow people to see the Welcome Team, Worship Team, PreK Teachers, Storytellers, Curriculum Bin Team, and all the ways to serve that does not include changing diapers.

Spotlight a key small group leader through a video and have them share why they love being a leader and how it is impacting their life and the lives of others. Then show it during service, through social media, and links inside online parent newsletters.

Have other staff and ministries outside of Kids Min shoot a little video about the effect your ministry has had on them, their families, and the church.
